Mummy Dogs

Dogs are possibly the best pet you could have. They are totally reliant and appreciative of you and never need much more than love and a place to live. How many people do you know that fit this description? Probably none. Dogs are one of the oldest known pets and people all over the world have them. There are little dogs and big ones. Quiet dogs and noisy dogs. But, they are share one characteristic...they love their owners with no reserve.

Halloween food - Mummy Dogs aka Pigs in a Blanket (2008)

This year I think I got the wrapping down! Hotdogs, croissant dough & peppercorns. I think the croissant dough was easier to work with than the biscuit dough I used last year.

Note: Do not buy "plump when you cook 'em" types of dogs for these, the dogs shrink as they cool and the wrap becomes too loose.

Mini Mummy Dogs Before Baking

Here's how I prepared the dough for wrapping: www.flickr.com/photos/amayu/4072871658

You can see my technique vastly improved from right to left. Long, thin strips of dough worked much better than the shorter, thicker ones.

The second batch. Notice there are a few that are way too puffy and perfectly wrapped only twice. The dough was too wide and not long enough. With these, you definitely don't want a perfect spiral. You want messy.

Here's what the dough looks like before rolling:

Last batch!

The last batch of mini mummies looked the best, after having perfected the method with the first two batches.

Mini Mummy Dog Wraps

Using an 11 ounce can of crescent roll dough, I pieced two triangles together to form a rectangle, then cut the rectangle in half. I stretched the small rectangle to the length of the cutting board (about 11 inches) and cut it into 1/4 inch strips. Grab a lil' smokey and wrap, wrap, wrap! Messier is better!

Here's how they turn out: www.flickr.com/photos/amayu/4072109929

My entire family is really, really sick of me asking to have pigs in blankets (hot dogs with cheddar cheese wrapped in crescent rolls) when I go over there for dinner. So I was really surprised when my mom said she was making me Mummy Dogs after I emailed the link as a joke. Apparently it was a ... painstaking process to wrap the crescent rolls all mummy-like. I didn't get a picture that makes them look as much like little mummies as they did in real life, but just believe me, they were amazing. Thanks again, Mom. You're the best!
